Works in Progress: Signifier at the neighborhood Playground

While I was in Udiapur the first time, I was here for an artist residency. I made posts about that experience and shows how the work progressed while I was there. Now that I am back I am working on several projects. I thought I would be nice to share those projects as they progress and get your feedback on the work.

My second self-portrait adventure was a little less dramatic than the first. I did not get attacked by an insects or anything else. However, Meropi went with me to man the camera and help me with the compositions. To work on the second photograph for the project we headed to a park that is in the old city of Udaipur, which is where we stay.  I actually made some photographs there last year for my Udaipur Remembered project and I did end up using a photograph from the location for one of the montages.

Meropi and I headed to the park at about 9am. She was concerned about having good sunlight, but I told her I did not think that the park ever got full sun because it is in between a bunch of buildings. We got there and I knew immediately that I wanted to climb onto the spherical jungle gym to make a photograph. We took several shots zooming in a little for some and out for others to see which gives the best composition. You see a side by side comparison above. I think I like the zoomed in version better, but I would love to hear your opinions in the comments below.

Then I decided to take a photograph on the merry-go-round. This was a little bit of a pain. Trying to get an interesting background was difficult. The sky was bright and the building behind the merry-go-round was just fading into the sky. We adjusted the camera position multiple times, basically trying to eliminate the sky and we finally got the photograph you see below. I think it worked out. We took one more photograph of me hanging from something that looked like stirrups hanging with the swings. However, I do not think the photograph has potential for the project so I am not showing it here.

I thought this was another successful photo endeavor. I would love to know which photograph you prefer, the one on the spherical jungle gym or the one on the merry-go-round.

Until next time, happy photoing!
