While I was in Udiapur the first time, I was here for an artist residency. I made posts about that experience and shows how the work progressed while I was there. Now that I am back I am working on several photography projects. I thought I would be nice to share those projects as they progress and get your feedback on the work. This post is about Signifier, my self-portrait project.
Creating a self-portrait at the Five Rathas for Signifier
As you may know, I was recently in Tamil Nadu. I was very excited to explore the historic sites of Mamallapuram and photograph them. The first site we went to was the Five Rathas (you can read a little more about it here). The Five Rathas are five structures carved directly from huge boulders. While we were walking around, I suddenly thought I should make a few potential photo’s for my self-portrait project Signifier.
I was very funny. I ran over to Meropi and told her I wanted her to take a few self-portraits of me lying on the rock. She said okay and I shoved my camera in her hands. It was hot and humid. I walked over to the rock and thew myself on it. The rock surface was hot. I kept telling Meropi to hurry up. Of course, being a good photographer she clicked multiple images with three different lens zooms.
The self-portraits are funny I think. Obviously I am a little self conscious. I think I look pretty funny in these photographs. I am not sure if any of them will make the cut. Only the future knows. Sadly I did not do anymore while on the trip. I wish I had. However, I am not sure if the project should extend outside Udaipur or stay contained within. Another question for time I guess.
At any rate, the experience was a good one. I am sure I was entertaining to the other visitors of the Five Rathas.
